After someone sets Paul Hanover's Victorian home ablaze, firefighters find the bodies of Paul Hanover and his fiancee inside. Sergeant Dan Cuneo is the first homicide investigator tapped to find the culprit. However, the mayor wants someone more senior working the case, and also assigns Abe Glitsky to it, a situation that doesn't sit well with Cuneo. To make matters worse, Cuneo's primary suspect is Catherine Hanover, the former college girlfriend of Glitsky's close friend, Dismas Hardy. While Hardy puts together a defense for Catherine, Glitsky conducts his own search for evidence to exonerate her.
