Six people, each apparently unconnected to the others, have been assassinated in a single night. The New Mexico police think it was a random killing spree. But chief deputy Kevin Kerney believes that the real target was one of the victims, a judge, and that the rest were murdered simply to confuse investigators. Kerney must sift through the judge's personal and professional contacts in order to find the person, or persons, capable of such a ruthless scheme.
