This is the thirteenth mystery featuring Mary Minor Harry Haristeen and her talking animal companions. Harry is feeling a bit lost; she's quit her job as postmistress because her superiors will no longer allow her to take her cats and dog to the office; in addition, her philandering ex-husband has asked her to marry him again. Her friend Susan is similarly adrift, with her marriage in trouble and her son about to leave for college. The two of them seek spiritual solace at the statue of the Virgin Mary at a nearby monastery...only to witness a miracle as the statue begins to weep bloody tears. But what seems to be a blessed event is soon followed by terrible tragedy when the dead body of Susan's great-uncle, a monk, is found at the statue's base.
