Mina, an African-American pre-teen, dreams of becoming a ballerina, and for a while it seems as if that dream might come true. Unfortunately, as she enters adolescence, she grows taller and fuller and her body no longer seems willing to obey the strict ballet steps it formerly did with ease. When she is asked to leave her exclusive ballet school, Mina chooses to believe that is is because she is black--and she might be right.
