This historical mystery is the eighth to star Benjamin January, a former slave who returned home to 19th-century New Orleans after spending years in Europe being educated as a surgeon. The bank where Benjamin January and his wife Rose keep their money has been robbed of every cent by a bank employee. Unless they catch the embezzler, Benjamin and Rose will lose their home, which they use as a school to teach freed slaves. Posing as slaves belonging to their white friend, Hannibal Sefton, the couple track the thief to a steamboat, where he is later found murdered.
