This unusual mix of forensic thriller and high fantasy is the debut of a projected series. Dubric is the Lord Castellan of the castle of Faldorrah, and as such, is responsible for the castle's security. Cursed by a goddess, he is haunted by the silently screaming ghosts of the murdered until he brings their killers to justice. When he is visited by the ghosts of a scullery maid and a milkmaid, it is not long before he discovers their grotesquely mutilated corpses, and is tasked with gathering the physical evidence that will allow him to find the madman responsible.

Dog writer Holly Winter trains, shows, and loves her own Alaskan malamutes and helps rescue others in need of protection. When she learns that a malamute is for sale at a pet shop, Holly visits Puppy Luv, where owner Diane Sweet is doing a brisk Valentine's Day business.
