Little Scarlet

The complex, uncomfortable evolution of race relations in America is explored in this eighth Easy Rawlins mystery, set during the 1965 Watts riots in LA. At the peak of the turmoil, a white man is dragged out of his car by the mob, and he takes refuge in the apartment of Nola, a red-haired black woman known as Li'l Scarlet. When Li'l Scarlet is murdered, the white cops of the LAPD are reluctant to investigate in such a charged atmosphere. Fearing for their personal safety as well as believing that calling attention to an apparent interracial murder will incite further violence, the police hires Easy to do their legwork for them.
