This novel of psychological suspense is by a British author acclaimed by critics and her peers on both sides of the pond. Inez Ferry is a widow who owns a building in a working-class London neighborhood, running an antique shop on the ground floor and renting out the apartments above it. Tension is running high because there's a serial killer in the area, strangling young women and stealing a small object from each to serve as a memento. When these objects start appearing in Inez's shop and one of the victims is found nearby, it seems possible that someone associated with Inez's building may be either the killer or the killer's next target.
