Brother Cadfael breaks his vows and leaves his beloved abbey to rescue Olivier de Bretagne, the unacknowledged son whom he fathered during his years as a Crusader. Olivier is being held prisoner by his former commander Philip FitzRobert, who has switched sides in the bitter civil war that divided 12th-century England between King Stephen and the Empress Maud. As Brother Cadfael struggles to complete his mission, he is also required to solve a murder (as per usual) and to free Olivier's brother-in-law Yves, wrongfully accused of the crime. This is the final volume in this long-running series.
