Gothic meets Western in this mystery, in which writer Edgar Allan Poe (the series protagonist of two previous novels) and scout Kit Carson team up to catch a killer. Two little girls and a wealthy albino have been found murdered and scalped; in addition, the girls' livers were missing from their bodies. Popular suspicion falls upon Chief Wolf Bear of the Crow tribe, a Native American working as an attraction in P. T. Barnum's American Museum. But Poe is certain of Wolf Bear's innocence, as is Kit Carson, who has come to New York City in pursuit of the murderer of his wife, a rogue mountain man known as Liver-Eating Johnson.
