In 1934, fired from Paramount Pictures where he had been writing screenplays, Cain published THE POSTMAN ALWAYS RINGS TWICE, his first novel. Frank Chambers is a drifter who wanders into a tavern and takes a job working for the owner. Meanwhile, he begins an affair with the tavern owner's wife and is soon helping her plan the murder of her husband.
