Acting as the middleman in a ransom exchange can be hazardous to one's health, as Burke discovers when he volunteers for such a job. When the exchange goes awry, Burke is shot, and his beloved dog, Pansy, is killed. Burke vows to wreak revenge, and his search for his assailants leads him into brushes with the Russian mob, Nigerian rebels, and a host of other underworld characters.
