A young African-American man addicted to crack cocaine and on trial for murder recounts the events that led to his arrest--which he claims is wrongful. His attempts to prove his innocence are, of course, in vain. Jones's novel is a strong indictment of the system, and of the difficulties faced by young impoverished black men when they are caught in it.
