Sano Ichiro and his wife Reiko investigate a murder at the Black Lotus temple, home of a radical Buddhist sect. They find their marriage threatened in the process. Sano believes that the murderer is a teenage girl, while Reiko believes that the girl is being sacrificed to the authorities by the abusive cult-leaders, who wish to shield the real culprit. Husband and wife find themselves in uncustomarily adversarial positions, and embark on separate investigations of their own.
