Louisiana detective Dave Robicheaux has just discovered that his late mother may have been a prostitute. As Robicheaux sets out to discover the truth, he becomes embroiled in a second mystery, this one involving the murder of an alleged child molester. These two disparate strands of plot converge against the vivid backdrop of life on the modern-day bayou.
