In the eighth historical mystery to feature Mary Russell and her famous husband, detective Sherlock Holmes, the couple joins with detective/crime writer Dashiell Hammett to explore secrets lurking in Mary`s past. Mary Russell has always believed herself responsible for the automobile crash that killed her parents and younger brother. Ten years later, she and Holmes return to her childhood home in San Francisco so that they can arrange for its sale. For Mary, the journey there is rife with odd, unsettled dreams; and arriving at her destination bodes no better: someone tries to kill her. An investigation gradually uncovers the truth behind the crash and the hitherto suppressed memories of what Mary experienced during the great earthquake in 1906, when she was only six years old.
